All Souls is an impressive brick built church in Bolton. It is a unique Grade II* listed Gothic Revival building designed by Paley and Austin and built around 1880-81. Sadly, by the 1980s the building had fallen into disuse and disrepair.
In partnership with the Churches Conservation Trust , All Souls has now been devotedly transformed into a vibrant new centre for community life, through a major project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund . The clever design utilises innovative pods to create ‘a building within a building’ whilst leaving the historic fabric largely untouched.
The innovative pods now provide office and meeting spaces, within the church, as well as a coffee shop and a cutting-edge multi-media exhibition that tells the stories of Boltonians both today and throughout the town’s history.
We were contacted by the project architects requesting a variety of wayfinding directories, individual room signs, toilet and lift Signs. They required a signage system that would sit harmoniously alongside both the original church building and the new contemporary structures. Our MSS directories were the obvious choice, as they are available in a variety of colours, can be designed to include arrows and symbols to facilitate wayfinding and allow the client to update the signs independently as and when they needed to. This is a useful asset when providing signage for office spaces as the businesses occupying the building often change. The individual room signs were also modular signage systems and the lift and toilet signs were spray painted, fret cut aluminium plates.
The colour and design chosen were to be sensitive to their surroundings, clearly directing visitors and employees around the premises without disturbing or distracting away from the beauty of the building. Our in-house installation team ensured that all signage was installed sympathetically to the space.
” The complexities of restoring a grade II* listed building and then creating two new structures within the historic fabric gave our staff and trustees many sleepless nights. Thankfully, from the moment we contacted GB Signs, the support and advice we received has been excellent. They worked hard to understand the brief and quickly came up with a range of well-considered appropriate options. The installation went very smoothly and the quality of the product sits perfectly within our building. As we began to secure new clients for our tenanted spaces we inevitably needed to add to the signage, I’m happy to say the aftercare has also been excellent and the modular nature of the signs makes changes/additions relatively easy to accommodate.”
